Define and provide examples:
Impermeable:
allows no substance to pass through it
Selectively Permeable:
only allows certain substances to pass through it
Permeable:
everything and anything can pass through it easily
Cellular Transport:
movement of substances into and out of a cell
Diffusion
movement of particles from an area of many of them (high concentration) to an area of few of them (low concentration)
diffusion continues until both areas have the same number of particles
Osmosis
a type of difusion
movement of water through a "selectively permeable membrane
vital to cell's survival because water must stay constant inside cell
What factors affect diffusion?
-the warmer the temperature, the faster diffusion happens
Everyday examples of diffusion:
air freshener - smelling it across the room
smoking - inhale it across the room
crystal light - diffused into water
putting salt in the pasta water
smoke from a fire can be smelled from a distance
caffeine - absorbs into blood stream
a pill/medicine absorbs into body
putting sugar into coffee
deflating a balloon
smelling food in another room
smelling gas at a gas stattion
skunk, you can smell it from a while away.:)
